Welcome

Kim Solez is a powerhouse in the medical world who has also maintained strong interests in music and the arts, and in technology. “Focus, focus,” is the way Kim describes the need for a medical specialist to concentrate intensely and for a long time on one small area of in-depth knowledge. He has done that, but at the same time has pursued various projects and activities outside the medical world.

 

 

The Banff Mule Deer at Twenty

At our second Banff meeting in ‘93
Mule deer poked their heads in to see
What was on the agenda.
Nature and nephrology meet.
Photogenic as the lesions we study,
They struck poses so majestic
They could chair a session.

So hard it is to tell species apart
The locals don't name individual deer.
But the mule deer know who is who,
Just as the lesions we study do.
They, too, have a core identity
Discernable by gene chip
or divining rod.

Mule deer do not run or trot, they stot,
Bounding so all four hooves touch the ground
At once. Impractical when described
But effective in reality, and beautiful to see.
Our meetings have their own beauty and grace.
As we recover from the occasional misstep.
We and the mule deer are one.

In those early informal meetings,
Our children attended too.
They exclaimed in pure delight
at the sight of the deer, as children will.
Let us be like that still.
After almost twenty years,
Let us retain our sense of wonder.

Let us stay open to the idea
That, at any moment, something
Unexpected might poke its head
Through the meeting room door.
Isn’t that why we get together?
For new ideas that lead our thinking
Down new trails and keep us on our toes.
